Grand Mercure Apartments Magnetic Island Sustainability Commitment

Grand Mercure Apartments Magnetic Island is committed to protecting the extraordinary natural and cultural environment of Yunbenun, the island home of the Wulgurukaba people, Traditional Owners of the land and sea Country on which we operate. Our sustainability approach is shaped by Accor’s global Environmental policies and strengthened by our local Environmental Management Plan, which outlines how we minimise our impact across energy, water, waste, wildlife, and community engagement.

Located within the World Heritage–listed Great Barrier Reef and surrounded by national park, fringing coral reefs, and unique wildlife habitats, our responsibility is clear: operate with care, reduce our footprint, and help guests experience Magnetic Island in a way that protects it for future generations.

  • Reducing energy and water consumption
  • Minimising waste and increasing recycling
  • Protecting wildlife and sensitive ecosystems
  • Supporting local environmental groups
  • Educating guests on sustainable behaviours

What is our region doing?

The Magnetic Island Community Development Association (MICDA) is a long‑standing community organisation with a strong commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship on Yunbenun (Magnetic Island).

MICDA is currently delivering two major environmental initiatives:

Coastal Stewardship Project – funded by the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, focusing on protecting coastal ecosystems, improving local resilience, and supporting community‑led conservation activities.

Citizen Science Project – funded by the Australian Government (DCCEEW), empowering residents and visitors to participate in environmental monitoring, data collection, and reef‑health reporting.

Through these projects and ongoing collaboration with community members, environmental groups, and regional stakeholders, MICDA helps preserve Magnetic Island’s natural landscape, protect its World Heritage values, and support a sustainable future for the island community.
