VIP Guest on Magnetic Island: A Koala Checking In
Every now and then, our team on Magnetic Island welcomes a truly extraordinary VIP guest, one of the island’s beloved wild koalas. With Magnetic Island home to one of the largest free‑roaming koala populations in Northern Queensland, it’s not unusual for these furry locals to wander through our grounds, explore the trees nearby, or occasionally need a little help finding their way home.
But when a koala needs a safe transfer back to its preferred patch of eucalyptus paradise, we don’t call a limousine, we call the experts.
Magnetic Island: A Koala Hotspot
Magnetic Island is famous for its thriving koala population. Studies estimate around 800 koalas live across the island’s diverse habitats, making it one of the most concentrated and accessible wild koala populations in northern Australia.
Koalas were introduced to the island in the 1930s to protect them from mainland threats, and today they’re often spotted snoozing in gum trees, wandering between feeding grounds, or delighting visitors along popular walking tracks like the Forts Walk. When a VIP Koala Needs Help, We Call the Magnetic Island Koala Hospital
If a koala visiting our hotel needs assistance, perhaps it’s disoriented, injured, or simply needs to be safely relocated our team contacts the Magnetic Island Koala Hospital, the island’s dedicated rescue and rehabilitation centre.
Located in Horseshoe Bay and run by wildlife veterinarian Dr. Ali Bee and her family, the hospital is the beating heart of koala conservation on Magnetic Island. They rescue, treat, rehabilitate, and release injured, sick, or orphaned koalas, caring for hundreds of animals each year.
Their work includes:
- Rescue & emergency response for koalas in danger
- Treatment of injuries from car strikes, dog attacks, burns, and green ant bites
- Long‑term rehabilitation for koalas recovering from illness or trauma
- Koala Kindergarten, where joeys and their mums receive specialised care
- Community education on safe koala interactions and conservation
- The hospital is also featured in the global Netflix series Izzy’s Koala World
Why We Partner With the Koala Hospital
Our hotel team is committed to protecting the wildlife that makes Magnetic Island so special. When a koala needs help, we rely on the hospital’s expertise to ensure:
- The koala is assessed by qualified wildlife professionals
- It receives medical care if needed
- It is safely transported back to suitable habitat
- It can return to the wild once fully recovered
This partnership ensures every koala, including our surprise VIP visitors, receives the best possible care.
A Magical Part of Staying on Magnetic Island
Guests often tell us that seeing a koala in the wild is the highlight of their stay. And we agree, there’s something magical about sharing the island with these gentle, iconic animals.
If you spot a koala during your visit:
- Enjoy from a distance
- Don’t approach or touch
- Use your camera zoom instead of getting close
- Contact the Magnetic Island Koala Hospital if the koala appears injured or in danger (Phone: 0428 785 488)
Magnetic Island is one of the few places in Australia where koalas roam freely and abundantly! We are proud to help protect them.
