Looking for the perfect weekend in Airlie Beach?

As someone who loves the Whitsundays, this is the exact itinerary I recommend to friends visiting the region. It combines rainforest walks, local cafés, artisan markets, waterfront relaxation, luxury accommodation, fresh seafood, and vibrant nightlife, all while supporting local businesses.

Whether you’re visiting for a romantic getaway, a friends’ weekend, or simply searching for the best things to do in Airlie Beach, this guide covers everything you need.

Why is Airlie Beach the Perfect Weekend Destination?

Nestled on the mainland gateway to the Whitsundays, Airlie Beach offers a unique mix of tropical rainforest, stunning coastal scenery, world-class accommodation, and a thriving local community. It’s one of Queensland’s most popular holiday destinations for good reason.

If you’re wondering:

What should I do in Airlie Beach for a weekend?
Where do locals go in Airlie Beach?
What are the best hidden gems in the Whitsundays?

This itinerary has you covered.

5:00 AM – Start the Day with a Sunrise Walk to Coral Beach
As an early riser – my perfect weekend begins before sunrise.

I always recommend making the short drive to Coral Beach near Shute Harbour and arriving early enough to watch the sun rise over the Coral Sea. The Coral Beach Trail winds through subtropical rainforest in Conway National Park before opening onto a secluded beach surrounded by natural beauty. The easy 3.9km return walk is one of the most rewarding and underrated experiences in the region.

The short walk through the rainforest to the beach is peaceful and refreshing. I relax the most where the WiFi is weak. Arriving just as the sun rises over the Coral Sea is something special. The water is calm, the air is fresh, and the quiet morning atmosphere makes it one of the most beautiful ways to begin a day near Airlie.

Local Tip
Bring water, comfortable walking shoes, and your camera. If you have extra time, continue to The Beak Lookout for spectacular views across the Whitsunday Passage.

8:00 AM – Breakfast at Rufus & Co.
After the walk, it’s time for coffee and breakfast.

One of my favourite breakfast spots is Rufus & Co., conveniently located near the Port of Airlie. Their matcha latte is consistently excellent, and it pairs perfectly with avocado toast or a tropical smoothie bowl.

The outdoor seating creates the ideal atmosphere for a slow breakfast while watching the town wake up around you.

This is where the weekend begins to shift into holiday mode.

Explore the Airlie Beach Foreshore Markets

If you’re visiting on a Saturday, the Airlie Beach Foreshore Markets are an absolute must.

Held along the picturesque foreshore, these community markets showcase local artists, makers, growers, and small businesses. Visitors can browse handcrafted jewellery, tropical artwork, locally made gifts, fresh produce, and unique Whitsundays-inspired creations. The markets operate every Saturday morning and are a longstanding local tradition.

Supporting local businesses is one of the best ways to experience the authentic character of Airlie Beach. You never know what treasures you’ll discover.

Relax at the Airlie Beach Lagoon

No perfect Airlie Beach weekend would be complete without spending time at the Airlie Beach Lagoon.

Located on the foreshore overlooking Pioneer Bay, the lagoon is one of the town’s most loved attractions. Whether you’re swimming, reading a book under a palm tree, or simply enjoying the ocean views, it’s the perfect place to slow down and embrace the tropical lifestyle.

Sometimes the best holiday moments aren’t scheduled, they happen when you simply stop and enjoy where you are.

3:00 PM – Check Into a Luxury Penthouse at The Sebel Whitsundays Airlie Beach
For accommodation, I always recommend booking a marina-view penthouse at The Sebel Whitsundays Airlie Beach.

When travelling with friends, having a spacious penthouse allows everyone to stay together while enjoying incredible views across the harbour and marina.

The large balconies, open living spaces, and elevated outlook make it feel like a true Whitsundays escape.

It’s the perfect base for a memorable weekend.

4:00 PM – A Little Holiday Glamour
Before heading out for the evening, I recommend visiting Whitsunday Sunee Hair.

Mel has a talent for creating effortless beach waves that perfectly suit the relaxed tropical atmosphere of Airlie Beach.

A little pampering goes a long way when you’re preparing for sunset drinks overlooking the marina.

5:30 PM – Sunset Drinks with a Marina View
This is my favourite part of the day.

Back at the penthouse, gather friends on the balcony, open a bottle of Tasmanian sparkling wine, and watch the marina come alive as the afternoon sun begins to fade.

The golden light reflecting across the boats and water creates one of those classic Whitsundays moments you’ll remember long after the weekend ends.

There’s no rush.

To accompany the drinks, I recommend a seafood platter from Fishi Seafood & Grill — fresh prawns, oysters, and local seafood are perfect for sharing with friends.

Evening  – Experience Airlie Beach Nightlife
When the evening continues, I often suggest heading to Frequent Seas.

What makes it unique is its atmosphere. Rather than traditional nightclub culture, the focus is on music, connection, and enjoying the energy of the town. The venue has become known for its relaxed social vibe and welcoming environment.

It’s a great way to experience the lively side of Airlie Beach while still keeping things casual and fun.
