My Magnetic Island to Airlie Beach Road Trip
By at Hotel Group Managing Director, Jeff Aquilina
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s really like to road trip between Magnetic Island and Airlie Beach, here’s my little insider routine. I make this journey often, catching up with my teams, and enjoying the best of North Queensland along the way.
Honestly, it’s one of the easiest, most affordable ways to get your Great Barrier Island fix, spot wildlife, and enjoy great local food without blowing the budget.
Leaving Townsville: Parking at the Sealink Ferry Terminal
When I start my trip in Townsville, I leave my car at the Sealink Ferry Terminal. It’s convenient and close to the ferry.
Cost: $10 Charged per 24‑hour period or part thereof.
From there, it’s a quick 20‑minute scenic ferry ride across Cleveland Bay to beautiful Magnetic Island.
A Couple of Nights on Magnetic Island
Once I’m on Maggie, I head straight to catch up with my staff at:
I usually stay a couple of nights to soak up the island pace and enjoy the simple pleasures that make Magnetic Island so special.
My favourite Magnetic Island cafes and restaurants
Just a short walk from Amaroo Rainforest Resort, Café De Mar is my go‑to breakfast spot. Great coffee, relaxed vibes, and the perfect way to start a day of meetings or island exploring.
When evening rolls in, I head to Boardwalk Restaurant & Bar. My favourite place to unwind, good food, friendly service, and that classic Magnetic Island atmosphere that makes you want to linger a little longer.
I also love stopping in at Granite Magnetic Island, a relaxed cocktail bar and eatery in the heart of Nelly Bay. Whether I’m grabbing a drink after a day of meetings or settling in with a few share plates, Granite has become part of my regular Maggie routine.
My Favourite Island Ritual: Bush Walks & Koala Spotting
No trip to Magnetic Island is complete without a bush walk. Even as a local, watching the koalas and rock wallabies on Maggie is still a standout moment, pure North Queensland magic, and totally free.
If you’re visiting, keep your eyes up in the trees. Maggie is one of the best places in Australia to see koalas in the wild.
My personal favourite bush walk: Horseshoe Bay to Radical Bay.
Back to the Mainland & Onward to Airlie Beach
After a couple of nights, I ferry back, pick up my car and hit the road south toward Airlie Beach, approximately 3-hour drive.
It’s a beautiful coastal drive, and I have a few must‑stop favourites along the way.
Ayr: DalSanto’s Continental Deli
I always stop here for:
- A freshly made Italian ham and cheese sandwich
- Great coffee
- A browse through the deli shelves
- It’s the kind of place you walk into for a snack and leave with a bag full of treats.
Bowen: Le Sorelle Coffee House
I swear by their coffee and their fudge, honestly, the best in North Queensland. It’s a friendly, local spot that’s perfect for a mid‑drive recharge.
You can’t drive past without stopping. I always recommend:
- A mango smoothie
A quick photo with the Big Mango (it’s practically a rite of passage)
Arriving in Airlie Beach: Where Jeff Stays
With eight at Hotels in Airlie Beach, I like to change things up each trip, but one of my regular favourites in Airlie Beach is at Water’s Edge Resort. The free parking, the sweeping Whitsundays views, and the relaxed, tropical atmosphere make it an easy base when I’m in town. Blue water, and that unmistakable Airlie energy, it always feels like coming home.
I’m deep into my fitness journey, and the gym facilities at Water’s Edge are a big part of what keeps me coming back.
Coffee & Conversations at The Deck
One of my favourite things to do when I’m back in Airlie is wander down to The Deck Restaurant, right next door to Heart Hotel and Gallery Whitsundays. It’s my go‑to spot for casual catch ups, staff chats, and a reliably good coffee. Jane, the owner, and her team are always so welcoming, which is probably why it’s become my unofficial office in the Whitsundays, whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or dinner, everyone knows where to find me.
Cold Rock Ice Creamery, conveniently located right across the road from Heart Hotel is also somewhere I frequent.
Why This Road Trip Works for Travellers Too
My routine actually doubles as a fantastic budget‑friendly itinerary for anyone wanting to experience both Magnetic Island and Airlie Beach:
- Affordable ferry to Magnetic Island
- Wildlife spotting that costs nothing
- Local food stops that feel like hidden gems
- Easy coastal driving with iconic Queensland scenery
- Two incredible destinations in one trip
Whether you’re chasing koalas on Maggie or sipping coffee in the main street of Airlie Beach, this road trip gives you the best of both worlds.
Enjoy – thanks for reading, Jeff.
