Hill Inlet Whitsundays

Q&A With Jac Guest Services at Boathaven Bay Holiday Apartments

Your Local Expert on Best Day Tours and Airlie Beach Eats

Q: Jac, what are the absolute must‑see experiences for guests visiting the Whitsundays?

A: Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet are non‑negotiable. Whitehaven is consistently ranked among the top 10 beaches in the world, and Hill Inlet is the third most photographed location in Australia after the Sydney Opera House and Uluru.

For a fast, fun day out that ticks off both icons plus snorkelling, I always recommend Ocean Rafting Southern Lights. It’s high‑energy, efficient, and gets you right into the heart of our backyard.

If guests want a more relaxed day focusing purely on Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet, SeaLink is my pick. They depart from Shute Harbour, closer to the islands,  and they circumnavigate, serve the best food on a day trip, and include a fantastic talk about the Traditional Owners. You can sit inside or outside, walk around, and enjoy air‑conditioned comfort the whole way.

Q: What about the Great Barrier Reef — is it worth adding an outer reef trip?

A: Absolutely. Everything around the Whitsunday Islands is part of the Great Barrier Reef, but the outer reef is where you’ll find bigger marine life and larger coral formations.

I personally choose Cruise Whitsundays for the outer reef because you can snorkel when and where it suits you. I always head straight upstairs to secure a shady spot under the umbrellas — a little insider trick!

I wait for the tide to drop before snorkelling, and I never miss the semi‑submersible tour. The marine biologist’s commentary is brilliant, and you’ll see things you won’t spot while snorkelling — like giant trevally the size of VW cars cruising under the pontoon.

Q: You’ve worked on overnight charter boats — how does that shape your recommendations?

A: I spent eight years working on overnight charter boats, and I’ve been to Hill Inlet more than 400 times. Every single visit still takes my breath away. That experience means I know the tides, the operators, the conditions, and the guest experience inside out — so when I recommend something, it’s because I know it delivers.

Q: What’s your ideal three‑day itinerary for first‑time visitors?

A:

Day 1: Ocean Rafting Southern Lights — Whitehaven, Hill Inlet, snorkelling.
Day 2: Cruise Whitsundays Outer Reef — snorkel, semi‑submersible, relax on the pontoon.
Day 3: Scenic flight over Heart Reef + sunset cruise on Sundowner.

I personally prefer Sundowner over sailing boats because she’s a pontoon vessel — super stable, easy to walk around, and perfect for that final holiday wind‑down.

Q: Where do you love to eat in Airlie Beach and Cannonvale?

Breakfast / Brunch

Fat Frog Café on Cannonvale Beach. The beach is seagrass, so you might spot a green turtle — or if you’re incredibly lucky, a dugong.

For guaranteed turtle sightings, I recommend the 1‑hour Turtle Tour with Whisper Cruises, a silent, battery‑powered boat with zero carbon footprint.

Lunch

Sorrento Restaurant & Bar at Coral Sea Marina. Great menu, great breeze, great views. If I’ve already had breakfast, I’ll head there for the 2‑for‑1 pizzas at 3pm, stay for happy hour at 4pm, and watch the sunset from the deck.

Dinner

Eastwoods on the Airlie Beach Esplanade — delicious Asian fusion, perfect for sharing.

Q: What makes at Boathaven Bay Holiday Apartments a great base for exploring the Whitsundays?

A: We’re close to the Port of Airlie and Shute Harbour departures, which makes day trips easy. Guests love having self‑contained apartments to come home to after big days on the water — space to relax, cook, unwind, and enjoy the views.

After exploring the reef, the islands, and the beaches, having your own apartment feels like the perfect reset.
